An intranet, of course, is a private network fed by a web server that publishes proprietary content specific to its owner. An intranet's home page is a daily starting point from which all employees can access calendars, phone lists, newsletters, bulletins, meeting agendas, and knowledge bases. Even very small organizations can have their own "intranet home page" — like we have here in our offices.

A "knowledge base" is an organized, searchable collection of proprietary documents containing knowledge that is pertinent to daily work activities. Most people who work in an office are knowledge workers, who typically spend 30% of their time searching for information (very expensive!). Searches are basically frustrating interruptions, and the average worker does not return to a task until 25 minutes after an interruption.
